Since January 2, 2026, Seen is out on all platforms. The song is taken from my upcoming album Dark Dog, due in January 2026 via Wellington Records.
Seen is an intimate and disarming song about the right to exist: the desire to be seen, to take up space, and not to disappear. I wrote the song after a long conversation with a friend about these very themes, but it gained an even deeper resonance through what was simultaneously unfolding in my own life. While my young daughter Irene was playfully learning language and songs, the track opens with her singing the children’s rhyme “Wie vrolijk is in de ochtend, die lacht de ganse dag… hip hoi”, I witnessed my father gradually losing those same abilities. Language, memory, and movement slowly eroded. This collision forms the emotional core of Seen.
In the lyrics, a gentle yet resolute promise emerges: “I won’t do the things that make you disappear.” It is a line that seems addressed both to another person and to myself.
Musically, Seen is a small, almost fragile miniature, but it is precisely in this restraint that its strength lies. At the end of the song, Irene’s voice returns — playfully nodding to pop artist Taylor Swift — singing “It’s me… hi” into a toy echo microphone. Seen is exactly that: a soft act of self-preservation and a quiet call to grant yourself, and your emotions, the right to exist.
